Healthcare delivery involves numerous organizational units, ranging from hospitals to physicians’ practices to pharmacies and health units providing single services.

Different units bring in different platforms, databases, a range of software that specialize in specific business purposes, and most important of all disparate EHRs.

Incompatible EHRs are non- conducive to the continuum of healthcare delivery. They impair the ability of health information systems to work across organizational boundaries. 

Interoperability has been a long challenge in the EHR space.


HIMSS definition (2013) of Interoperability at 3 levels:

  1. Foundational: The data exchange between information systems does not require the ability to interpret received data.
  2. Structural: The data exchange between information systems requires interpretation of received data at field level.
  3. Semantic: The data exchange between information systems supports electronic exchange of patient summary information among caregivers and other authorized parties via disparate EHR.

Our interface solutions/components are designed to meet all 3 levels of interoperability – foundational, structural and semantic.

They are custom built with a strong focus on fast implementations and are based on HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) standards framework.

FHIR standards enable support for RESTful architectures and seamless exchange of information using messages or documents. Supported by a strong foundation of web standards (XML, JSON, HTTP, Atom, OAuth, etc.)

FHIR solutions can be used in wide variety of contexts – mobile phone apps, cloud communication, text based sharing and server communications in large institutions.

Clinical trials are invaluable assets that provide evidence – based medical information to clinicians and impacts treatment decisions. Matching clinical trials is a time consuming process that requires combing through large amounts of unstructured data.

Instead of transforming existing patient records into structured formats that are computable, our NLP solution is designed to understand the current format of both, the study protocol and patient record. 


Solution Methodology

The solution works in three parts:

  • Natural Language Processing – Utilizing a collection of technologies to process and derive meaning out of natural text annotations in study protocols and patient records.
  • Ontology Expansion- Provide the system with a better understanding by defining relationships between hierarchies, synonyms, causes and symptoms.
  • Matching Algorithms – Run ‘Match’ processes on the study process and patient records.

NLP extension for BTRIS (Biomedical Translational Research Information System)

The NLP engine is capable of ingesting proprietary, detailed corpus components from BTRIS.

This results in improved accuracy as the BTRIS feed provides additional context and allows for higher result confidence scores and matching.

A recent survey found that approx. 20% of images were hand carried or emailed directly to physicians, about 90% of images were entered in the Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), if available.
